A MERV number is only a reflection of the initial efficiency of the air cleaner and doesn’t tell you a thing about its efficiency over time - how it will perform a month, six months or even a year after installation. A balanced look at whole-house air cleaners looks at initial efficiency, efficiency over time, service life (how long between servicings), service actions (how hard it is to service it), the up-front cost and the maintenance costs.
